The Homogeneous Representation of Poor Whites in Literature.

Advisor: Rick Bass.

Abstract: Stereotypes are ingrained in humanity, both on a larger scale as a part of how our society functions and on a smaller scale as part of how we, as individuals, organize out thoughts and establish hierarchies for those around us. While some stereotypes are rooted in fact, a broader application of stereotypical thinking to large populations can and does lead to homogeneous representation. Using the popular memoir Hillbilly Elegy as a leading example, this paper examines the representation of poor whites in literature and how a largely homogeneous representation of this group can have great implications in how readers perceive poor whites, and how realities are far more complex.
